Artist Profile: DJ City

Before he was DJ City, before the residencies and the records pressed in Munich and Dresden, Johan Norling was a Swedish kid in front of a television, watching MTV and Viva. His adamant view would resolve into a recurring vision: big European cities after dark, populated by people who seemed to have stepped outside the ordinary, when that was still a thing. That reverie has organized everything Norling has done since then. It explains why a producer who traffics in cowbells and half-sung confessions can, in the right room, feel like a documentarian of a place that exists mostly in longing. His first major public breakthrough came with Teenage Sex Drive, released on his co-imprint, Stockholm's Born Free, in 2018, after a run of small-edition cassette releases.

Norling came up inside Cocktail d'Amore, the queer Berlin party founded by the Italian duo Discodromo and housed, until early 2020, in the cavernous Griessmuehle in Neukölln. He held a residency there through the venue's closure, a loss the cultural capital's nightlife still laments as nothing short of a civic wound. From that vantage, he began releasing on Public Possession, the Munich label run by Marvin Schuhmann and Valentino Betz, issuing two companion EPs in April 2020, Important Message and City of Sex.

What followed was a steady, oddly literary discography. Your Love and Los Pasos Perdidos takes the skeleton of Chicago house and dresses it in Italo melancholy and deadpan narration. His 2023 Black Nikes arrived on Permanent Vacation, and autumn 2024 brought the long-form, Paris, Rome, his first album for Public Possession, where capitals, literature, morning-after debris, sentimental drift and house share space with Scandinavian disco and streaks of pop sincerity.

The Cosmicomics EP surfaced a month later on Dresden's Uncanny Valley. Drifting with the slow gravity of deep-space disco with a Drexciya reference tucked into its circuitry, the release's title comes from Italo Calvino's 1965 short-story collection. It connects the record to eighties Italo disco and seventies science-fiction cinema.

Norling's most recent phase has moved between collaboration and renewed alias-like world-building. In June 2025, I Need paired DJ City with Manuel Darquart for a Public Possession 12-inch in Italo, Club and Beatless versions. In February 2026, For Several Eternals Before There Were Years appeared as the latest release, moving his music into a vaporous corridor of ambient, deep house and techno.

As a DJ, his Cocktail d'Amore session for Crack Magazine, cut during the Griessmuehle goodbye, runs harder and more cosmic than his studio work. He also airs a roughly bi-monthly show, Blue Monday, on the Munich community station Radio 80000, and a 2021 broadcast for Rinse FM captured the residency in its full flight. His external mixes come from across the community radio sphere, with Kiosk, Retreat, Sauna, Refuge, Beats in Space, and others on the roster.

In October 2023, he and the DJ La Schmock founded Bad Dad, a queer night in Kreuzberg, pitched, with characteristic warmth, to daddies of every kind and the people who love them. The party has since spread to Crack Bellmer and become a fixture of its calendar. Beyond Germany, on 13 June, DJ City will play at Control Club as part of a special collaboration between Public Possession x BAR•TON x Control. The night also sees Bell Towers and Courtney Bailey in the Berlin Room.

With all this, DJ City never tips into sentimentality due to the precision in his work. Norling treats the club as a medium, a technology for assembling a self. His songs then read as field notes filed from within it. The imaginary city he first glimpsed on late-night television was never going to hold still long enough to be reached, but he's spent a career building approximations of it and naming and renaming himself inside them, one knowing record at a time.
