Sansibar stands as a crucial figure in the fertile yet understated Finnish electronic underground, splitting time between Berlin and Helsinki while maintaining residencies at key Helsinki venues, Kaiku and Post Bar. His ambition is rooted in a fascination with frequency manipulation and a vision of sound as transportation, bridging the sterile precision of electro with the emotional charge of trance and breaks.
Born Sunny Seppä to a Finnish-Uruguayan family in Helsinki, he spent his early musical life revolving around punk and metal, playing guitar, bass, and drums in DIY bands. When he pivoted to electronic music production, it was out of a desire for full creative autonomy. This pursuit laid the groundwork for his own labelSin Sistema.
Translated from Spanish as "Without System", Sin Sistema is a statement of intent. Based in Berlin, the imprint reflects Sansibar’s resistance to structural or bureaucratic limitations. It launched in 2024 withWe Rise, a four-track collection that fuses acid trance, techno and garage elements. This was followed byGlorified Intake, the debut EP from Denzel, released in November 2024. Sin Sistema also extends to curation through its own club night residency at Post Bar in Helsinki.
His live shows are anchored by tightly controlled drum-machine pulses and synths that spiral between restraint and intensity. As a DJ, he navigates across electro, breakbeat, trance, acid and ambient. His RA Podcast #976 and Crack Mix 451 showcase this genre-fluid approach. His contributions to IDA Radio (as host ofSeinast seina tapeediks) and EOS Radio further cement his role as a translocal cratedigger.
Sansibar emerged in a genre often known for its purity tests, Detroit-style electro, and quickly demonstrated technical command. His debut album,Targeted Individuals, was pressed loud for club impact and paid tribute to electro originators while embedding his own voice. That same year, hisWhite Swan EP on Natural Sciences expanded this aesthetic through detailed sound design and rhythmic precision.
By 2020, he leaned into more expansive sonic territories. The track "Game Over" pointed to this shift. Its trance motifs and breakbeats signaled a growing interest in emotional resonance and atmospheric depth. This evolution reached full expression with his second album,Sans Musique, in 2021. The album also included a remix from Earth People, and the track "Scully" became a club favorite.
In 2023, he collaborated with Reptant on a split 7-inch for the Leipzig-based label Warning. Their dual remixes — "Lizard of Oz (Sansibar Shapeshift)" and "My Boom (Reptant Lizard Tech Mix)" — were a playful but precise pairing of mutant electro. Throughout 2024, Sansibar also remixed tracks by artists such as Secretsundaze, Priori, IDA, Mono Junk, and Emkay.
In early 2024, Sansibar's practice came into line with modern geopolitical reality. A planned tour of Australia was abruptly cancelled after he was detained and interrogated for nine hours upon arrival. The incident underscored the themes of autonomy and systemic pressure that had long informed his music. Targeted Individuals suddenly resonated as a lived experience.
Despite such unpleasant instances, Sansibar's international reputation continues to grow. He has appeared on bills across the world, including in Japan, Mexico, Colombia, the Netherlands, and more. On December 13, 2025, he will perform at Control Club, invited by Bucharest's own purveyors of the deep and Detroit, GAAP. Recent performances include Love International Festival and Dimensions in Croatia, Manchester's Stage & Radio, and RSO.BERLIN. At just 32, he occupies a rare position as a technically gifted producer, an ideologically coherent artist, and an imaginative selector.
What makes Sansibar remarkable is his refusal to let systems, whether stylistic or institutional, define his work. His music is a joyous rejection of rigidity that demands movement. At just 32, he occupies a rare position as a technically gifted producer, an ideologically coherent artist, and an imaginative selector.
