AEREA make techno that sweats, breathes, and shines. Berlin and Madrid can argue over custody of the enigmatic duo, but their music drifts borderless; its passport inked somewhere between a BCCO warehouse and pothole vapor. Their driving rhythms are engineered to shoulder-load industrial concrete, while an esoteric voice, never quite at the fore, never quite behind it, threads through the machinery with aesthetic purpose. Together, they produce a sound reminiscent of oxygen: fluid and immersive, intimate and expansive.
None of it particularly wants to resolve into anything, except a proper night on the dancefloor. AEREA's tracks hold a claustrophobic hum, refusing to let anything breathe until the tension's thick enough to chew. Dense percussion locks in the low end, only for a synth line to improvise its own escape, while a carefully placed vocal line balances the emotional load of the entire thing. The result is the sound of something stretching awake, cold-blooded, turning heavier, sweatier, more animalistic the longer it’s experienced.
This instinct is all over their two most recent releases. "In a Spiral," out in May on their own label, Terra, is a hardgroove cut built on rolling percussion. "the world is still a jungle" followed in July, holding that low hum a little longer before it finally breaks open.
That July release went out a day before AEREA walked on a stage in the Aragonese desert. Monegros Desert Festival was their debut there, deep after dark, playing back-to-back with future.666. Mad Cool in Madrid had come two weeks earlier. Within a single month, AEREA went from a name circulating in Berlin's hardgroove circles to a fixture on the biggest stages in their home country.
Next Stop: Everywhere
The rest of 2026 only keeps the same torrid pace. September takes them to a sold-out Boiler Room in Maastricht. In October, they open Terminal V's first Australian edition in Scoresby. November puts them at Elsewhere in Brooklyn for their first New York City show. And now, the path leads to Bucharest, where they take over Control's Berlin Room on Friday, September 25, with a highly anticipated live set of layered, breathable techno.
